Tove attended the Brobergska samskolan in the building now housing the Design Museum. She disliked school – even feared it – and was finally allowed to drop out by the permission of her parents at the age of 15, when she started art school in Stockholm.
Later on, Tove studied at The Finnish Art Society’s Drawing School, or Ateneum. During this period, she met the love of her life, graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä (1917-2009), at the Artists’ Association of Finland’s Christmas party.
At one point, Tove had a break from Ateneum to study as a private student of her artistic idol, Sam Vanni (1908-1992). “That man fascinates me because to speak with him I have to constantly push myself to a higher level”, Tove wrote in her journal.
