Johan Ludvig Runeberg’s Memorial

Walter Runeberg

The son of Finland’s national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877), Walter Runeberg (1838-1920), crafted a memorial for his father, now standing in the middle of the Esplanadi park. At the feet of the poet, the Maiden of Finland leans against a stone table cut with the first and two last phrases of the national anthem Maamme (‘Our Country’).

What does a national anthem bring to your mind? What would be the makings of a national anthem for today’s Finland?
