The Esplanade Park was for a long time a place where gay people sought company, although only the most daring would do it during daylight hours. Prior to Helsinki Pride, the capital of Finland celebrated the so-called Liberation Days for several decades. During the 1994 Liberation Days, the first gay couples in Finland were married at the Esplanade bandstand: three male couples and one female couple said “I do” in a ceremony that at the time had no legal status. The registration of same-sex unions became possible in Finland in 2002, and same-sex marriage will become legal in 2017.
